The end of October is near, and as November approaches, I wanted to get the ball rolling and share with you what I have in store in the coming months.  Next month's 30-day challenge is to become a powerful negotiator, focusing on what you need to know to Negotiate yourself through anything.  That's right, I will be absorbing these concepts to enlighten you, as well as share my practical experiences using any techniques I learned.  Accompanying me on this journey, will be three of the most highly-touted negotiations books:  Bargaining for Advantage, Start with No and 3D Negotiation.

Do you have a 212 Degree Attitude?

Cheers to progress and results!  In a little over two weeks, ActualizeDreams.com has drawn in a daily average of over 40 unique visitors, with 50 page views.  Thank you for the support.  I will continue this momentum moving forward with small daily steps - that's really the key.  I'm also ecstatic to have received a few comments on my previous posts from readers, so that has been really encouraging and an added motivation to keep going.  On that note, I'd like to share a really inspirational quote to get us through the brick walls of progress:

212 degree attitude - "the only thing that stands between a person and what they want in life is THE WILL TO TRY IT and the FAITH to believe it is possible".

My three mini goals for Week #3 are as follows:

  1. Come up with 10 post ideas
  2. Reach out to other bloggers in my niche, and provide insightful comments
  3. Write a "Review Post"

Cheer me on...

12 Pieces of Blog Wisdom every Blog Writer should Know

Here's a distillation of my thoughts and what I learned after analyzing my two favorite blogs, Think Simple Now and Zen Habits, and reading "27 Must Read Tips and Tutorials for Bloggers", a compilation of articles by the leading authorities of blog writing, including Rand Fishkin, Seth Godin, Skellie from Skelliewag, Chris Garrett, Liz Strauss and Chris Brogan.

1.  Write really well

Ernest Hemingway once famously told F. Scott Fitzgerald, "I write one page of masterpiece to 91 pages of shit.  I try to put the shit in the wastebasket."

2.  Have a clear message

Upon first glance, and a quick browse through the archives of Zen Habits and Think Simple Now, readers can immediately sense that the key message from both writers is about simplifying your life to achieve happiness.  This is clearly material that people want to read and share.

3.  Have a conversation

What strikes me most when I read good blogs is the informality and friendliness of the words, or rather the conversational nature of it.  Reading an interest blog article, is like having an engaging conversation with your friend.  These blogs are written from the first person point of view, and uses pronouns, such as "I" and "you".

4.  Post with purpose

Leo Babauta states the frequency of his post clearly on his "About" page - "Zen Habits features three powerful articles a week on:  simplicity, health & fitness, motivation and inspiration, frugality, family life, happiness, goals, getting great things done, and living in the moment."

On Think Simple Now's About Page, Tina Su writes, we "publish content when we have something that we believe is worthy of your time and attention."

5.  Use lists

Use lists, as I am now.  It helps to break up the material, and help the brain process the material more efficiently and effectively, a technique, known as chunking.

6.  Start at the beginning and take your readers through a months-long education.

You won't believe this, but the inspiration behind the Actualize Dreams blog was the Julie/Julia project

7.  Utilize social media and RSS

Encourage your readers to digg and Twitter your posts, use furl and reddit.  Also, encourage your readers to subscribe by RSS.  Another valuable tip is to make sure you claim your blog with Technorati, and submit it with Alltop.  Lastly, tag your posts at Technorati and Delicious, to help give your site added exposure.

8.  Invite guest bloggers

This is something I have not done yet, but look forward to exploring.

9.  Have an inviting and clean design

I like the simplicity and clean layouts of Think Simple Now and Zen Habits.

10. Write an attention-grabbing title

The challenge is to create an attention-grabbing title that conveys what you want to communicate in the simplest fashion.  A great source for viewing attractive titles, can be found daily on Delicious' Popular Bookmarks

11.  Use pretty pictures and give credit

This was perhaps one of the best tips I picked up today - where and how to get high quality pictures that add meaning and punch to your article.  The answer, Flickr users, who have chosen to offer their work under a Creative Commons license.

12.  Spark a discussion

Try to conclude your post with an invitation to followup with additional comments or suggestions to further the discussion.

Of course this list can go on, but I just presented the key areas that I'm focused on right now, for creating and growing my blog.  What do you think?  Is there a piece of blog wisdom that is blatantly left off the list?

Week 2 Goals towards Challenge #1: Building a Blog and a Following

Tuesday

Three mini goals per week

Good news, my StumbleUpon campaign has been off and running - I set a daily budget for $5, for a total of $25 this week, and have received over 200 page views in the last two days.  However, I realize that I have a lot of work and improvements to do.  I became cognizant of the fact that it may be confusing for readers to see step-by-step instructions within the content I am trying to promote.  In fact, stating my goal each time within my post is distracting, and could very well detract from the overall message of the post.  To rectify this, I will ensure that each 30-day challenge follow this formula:

30-Day Challenge Outline:

  1. General Introduction:  at the beginning of the month, I will give a general introduction to my 30-day Goal, and why it is important.
  2. Weekly road map:  each week, I will highlight three action items that I plan to tackle, so that by the end of the month, I will have done at least 12 things to move myself closer towards my Goal.
  3. Recap & Results:  experience is not the best teacher in life - rather, it is "evaluated experience".  At the end of the month, I will summarize my journey, and what I accomplished at the end of the month.
